Mosul Maqam

Mosul Maqam, a project in which researchers gather stories of Maqam practitioners and guardians in Mosul. Maqam is the system of melodic modes in the traditional shared musical culture of the MENA region. We aim to support the preservation of endangered Mosuli musical heritage for future generations by building a repository for the Mosuli Maqam. Our project also supports innovative ways to create new art forms that speak to younger audiences and open up multiple realities, narratives and futures. This project is made possible by generous funding from the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund, in partnership with the UK Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and It is carried out in partnership with the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter and many local partners in Mosul.
